Easy 4th of July Cupcakes on a patriotic board.

Well, frost my cupcake and call me patriotic! America is turning 250 years old!

That’s right, our nation is celebrating a quarter of a millennium of freedom, fireworks, and family gatherings, and what better way to join the party than with a batch of festive, easy, 4th of July cupcakes? These red, white, and blue beauties are the perfect centerpiece for your Independence Day celebration.

They’re made using the Betty Crocker “America’s Birthday Cake Mix”, a delicious and utterly irresistible white cake that’s super moist, sweet, and has red and blue chips. It’s SO good y’all!

Top them off with my light, fluffy, and extra creamy homemade buttercream frosting. Sprinkle with red, white, and blue jimmies and patriotic gummies for a treat that will disappear faster than a sparkler burns on a warm summer’s night!

Cake Ingredients

  • 1–13.25 ounce Betty Crocker, Super Moist, America’s Birthday Cake Mix
  • 1 Cup Water
  • ¼ Cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
Ingredients for Patriotic Cupcakes.

Homemade Vanilla Bean Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 Cup Butter, Softened
  • 1 Cup Shortening
  • 8 Cups powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
  • 6 fluid ounces heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup Patriotic Sprinkles and other 4th of July decorations

This recipe starts off with preparing the cupcakes and ends with my Special Buttercream Frosting. If you love buttercream, you are going to LOVE this recipe. So grab your apron and let’s get baking friends!

Follow the instructions on the back of the cake mix box. Begin by preheating the oven to 350° (F). Line two muffin tins (24 cups) with muffin cup liners. I like to use patriotic cup liners or red liners for a more festive look.

TIP: You can make this into a cake rather than cupcakes if desired. Grease only the bottom of a 13”x9” pan or bottom and sides of all other pans.

In a large bowl add cake mix, water, oil and eggs.

Cake mix ingredients in a large bowl.

With a mixer on medium speed, or my preferred method for this recipe, beat vigorously by hand for 2 minutes. Break out those muscles my friends…or in my case…flappy chicken wings!

TIP: Why do I prefer to mix it by hand? From experience, I’ve learned it prevents me from over beating the cake mix, which can add too much air to the batter, causing the cupcakes to fall in the center during baking.

Cake mix, mixed in a large bowl with a wire whisk.

Fill each muffin tin 2/3rds the way full. A word of caution…be careful not to overfill the cupcake liners.

Place the filled muffin tins in the preheated oven and bake for 13–18 minutes until the center of each cupcake springs back when gently pressed or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool 10 minutes before removing from the pan. Cool completely on a rack before frosting. I got excited about decorating these festive cupcakes and didn’t take photos of them cooling. Sorry!

Before I share this recipe, please know that you can use store-bought frosting. However, if you want to kick these cake mix cupcakes up to another level, I highly recommend using this easy cream buttercream frosting! It pairs beautifully with this vanilla cake. So yummy!

In a large bowl, or the bowl of your stand mixer, cream together 1 cup softened butter and 1 cup shortening. Slowly add in 8 cups of powdered sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons of vanilla and 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste. Mix on medium speed until well combined, making sure you scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Now for the secret ingredient to this creamy frosting…heavy whipping cream! With the mixer on low, slowly add 6 fluid ounces of cold heavy whipping cream. Beat until smooth and creamy. If the consistency is still too stiff, add more whipping cream until you achieve the desired consistency.

When it comes to decorating patriotic cupcakes, this is where the real fun begins! Think of your cupcakes as tiny edible fireworks just waiting to steal the show. Because…they are going to do just that!

Start with a generous swirl of vanilla buttercream. I like to pipe the frosting in a pretty swirl that looks fancy enough to impress the neighbors but is surprisingly easy to pull off.

Sprinkles are your best friend here! Cover the tops with red, white, and blue jimmies, star-shaped sprinkles, sanding sugar, or festive confetti sprinkles. The more sparkle, the better. After all, the 4th of July isn’t exactly known for being subtle.

Want to take things up a notch? Top each cupcake with a miniature American flag, a gummy star, or even a few fresh blueberries and sliced strawberries for a naturally colorful garnish.

The best part? There’s no right or wrong way to decorate these cupcakes. Whether they’re bakery-worthy masterpieces or delightfully lopsided creations made with little helpers in the kitchen, which I highly encourage, they’ll bring plenty of patriotic charm to your celebration. Besides, once everyone takes a bite, they’ll be too busy enjoying the frosting to notice if your stars aren’t perfectly aligned!

Making patriotic cupcakes festive is easy! Use red, white, and blue cupcake liners, pile on the sprinkles, and top them with gummy stars, fresh berries, or miniature flags. If you’re baking with kids or grandkids, set out a variety of toppings and let everyone create their own cupcake masterpiece.

You can color the frosting by dividing it up into three separate containers and adding red and blue food coloring.

TIP: For an extra-special surprise, if you can’t find the “America’s Birthday Cake” cake mix, you can use a vanilla cake mix and add a few red and blue sprinkles to the cupcake batter.

Another fun idea is to tuck a spoonful of berry jam into the center. Arrange the finished cupcakes on a festive platter and watch them disappear faster than fireworks on the 4th of July. The more colorful and creative they are, the more memorable your celebration will be!

These festive cupcakes are the perfect sweet ending to any 4th of July celebration. Serve them alongside barbecue favorites, fresh fruit, and ice-cold lemonade for a dessert spread that’s sure to impress. For an extra patriotic touch, arrange the cupcakes on a red, white, and blue platter and scatter a few miniature flags around the display.
