Sports are back on the menu! There’s nothing better than Fall Sports and the foods that go with them! Finger foods are my “go to” when it comes to watching sporting events at home.

I love grazing through the game. (It’s the sport I’m the best at! Gold Medal Winner in Grazing!)

Last year for the Super Bowl I created a pizza substitute similar, but way better, to the frozen grocery store pizza rolls. An appetizer I could make the day before and cook the day of! The year before I made Sticky Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls! Working with Egg Roll Wrappers to create a new finger food is fun cooking experience and one worth repeating! There are so many recipes you can create with an Egg Roll Wrapper.

This time I stuffed the paper thing wrappers with Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Cheese, and Marinara sauce. Fried them to a golden brown, topped them off with a hefty sprinkle of Parmesan Cheese, and served them with a side of warm marinara sauce for dipping and dunkin’….there has to be dunkin’ with crispy egg roll wrappers.

How to Make Homemade Pizza Rolls

In a large bowl combine 1 cup browned Italian Sausage and 8 ounces chopped pepperoni slices.

TIP: You can use thick or think pepperoni slices. It really depends on the texture you’re trying to obtain. Thicker pepperoni will give you “cubes” of pepperoni, thin slices of pepperoni, thinner pieces.

Chopped Pepperoni and Browned Italian Sausage in a bowl

Add 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup of your favorite jar of marinara or spaghetti sauce.

TIP: A chunky sauce is great in this recipe! Especially if you enjoy little bits of tomatoes mixed in with your pizza.

Other “Stuffing Pizza Ingredients” You can Add:

  • Sliced Sweet Peppers or chopped bell pepper
  • Diced Onion
  • Sliced and chopped mushrooms
  • Sliced Olives
  • Browned ground beef
  • Sliced Ham or Salami
Adding grated cheese and jarred marinara sauce to pepperoni and sausage.

Mix all the ingredients until well combined. (To quote one of my favorite ladies “Like So. Like This, Like That! You do you!”)

Stuffing Pizza Rolls

Place two tablespoons of the pizza filling in the middle of each egg roll wrapper. Notice there are more “filling” ingredients than sauce. This makes it easier to work with when stuffing the egg roll wrappers. Don’t worry you have that dipping sauce to dip in at the end!

Using your fingertip…brush the edges of each egg roll wrapper with water. Fold in the sides and roll closed. (Think baby Burrito’s. It just dawned on me what a culturally diverse dish this is, Chinese Egg Roll Wrapper, Italian Filling, wrapped like a Mexican Food Burrito! Maybe I should have called them “Melting Pot Rollers”? What a fun dish!)

Rolling the Egg Roll Wrapper that is filled with stuffing.

Continue making the Pizza Rolls until all 24 egg roll wrappers have been used.  Once all the pizza rolls have been made you can do one of two things…you can fry them up and serve them immediately…or you can roll them up, cover them with plastic wrap, and store them in your refrigerator up to two days before frying.

How To Cook Pizza Rollers

In a deep Dutch oven, add 3 inches of vegetable oil. Heat to 375°. Place seam side down. This prevents the seam from popping open during frying.Begin with the seam first and then rotate the egg roll around using a fry spatula. Fry the egg rolls for 1–2 minutes or until golden brown.

Place the egg roll on a paper towel lined baking sheet to absorb any extra oil.

Garnish the Pizza rolls with grated Parmesan cheese and freshly chopped parsley. Serve with a side of the same marinara sauce you used in the pizza rolls.

TIP: You can serve the sauce warm or cold. I prefer warm, but it’s up to your individualized tastes.

Cut the egg rolls in half.  This will give you 48 individual pizza rolls. Plus it’s a much prettier presentation.

My family went NUTS for this warm cheesy Italian treat! They said they were the best appetizer of 2020! (Perhaps not the hardest thing to accomplish…since it is 2020! Just sayin’…)

All that aside…these deep-fried pizza rolls are so scrumptious! The melted cheese with the meaty filling. It’s a winning appetizer or great Friday night “eats”! Game Day or Family Movie Night…this copy cat Homemade Totino’s Pizza Roll Recipe will quickly become a favorite at your Nest!

AMEN, sister, about the Sports! It's my excuse to make all sorts of wonderful, decadent things!! I'm always a bit 'down' immediately after the Super Bowl, after so many weeks of excited planning: fried squid, Buffalo wings, spinach pies, pizzas... And it's just my husband and me! These are on my list - copied onto a Word document - for football season later on in 2024. They look perfectly YUMMY - thank you for the recipe!
