A few weeks ago a follower on Instagram asked if I had a recipe for Banana Cream Pie? Suddenly I realized that in all my years of blogging, I hadn’t shared my recipe for my simple, yet scrumptious, jello banana cream pie! (Say What???)

Growing up we never had Banana Cream Pie! Mom wasn’t a fan of anything banana…except popsicles?(Are you grabbing your chests? It’s okay…just breathe… I made it to adulthood.) It was rough, there were no peanut butter and banana sandwiches growing up. Once I had a slice of this classic creamy dessert, I knew what I had missed growing up! (There was a little mourning, not gonna lie…years of lost banana cream pies!)

I’m good now. Know why? Now I know how to make a really Yummy Banana Cream Pie!

Thanks to meshing together Jello instant banana pudding and homemade whipped cream, I’ve created a wonderful filling for this favorite dessert!

How to Make Easy Banana Cream Pie

Ingredients needed for Banana Cream Pie

  • 1 – 9inch baked pie shell
  • 2 – (3.4 oz) Banana Cream Jell-O Instant Pudding and Pie Filling
  • 2 Cups Milk, cold
  • 2 C Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 6 Tablespoons Confectioners sugar
  • 4 large bananas, sliced

The Pie Crust

You can make your own homemade crust from scratch, I recommend my Flaky Pie Crust Recipe!

You can also buy a premade crust in the freezer section of your grocery store and bake it. (Yes! Those were hard words for me to get out! I do love me a homemade crust!)

Whatever method you chose, after the shell is baked, set it aside and let it cool completely.

TIP: It’s important for the crust to cool completely, so the filling doesn’t melt!

How To Make Banana Cream Pie Filling

There are two ways to make this recipe. My original method of layering the sliced bananas in the bottom of your cooled pie crust….or

TIP: Slice the bananas right over the pie crust. Gently pushed them around to fill the pie crust.

Bananas sliced and layered in the bottom of the pie crust.

…The other method is to add the sliced bananas to the banana cream pie filling and pour it into the pie shell. Either method works really well for this pie. It is truly a matter of personal preference.

I prefer the method of slicing the bananas over the crust and arranging them around till the shell is filled.

TIP: The banana’s can turn a little brown if you don’t completely cover them with the pudding pushing it down into, and around the sliced banana’s.

Banana Cream Filling

In a large bowl add 2 (3.4 oz) packages of instant banana pudding and pie filling. Add 2 cups of ice-cold milk. Using a Wire Whisk, mix until well combined and mixture thickens. Place mixture in refrigerator while making homemade whipped cream.

Mixing pudding and milk in large bowl with wire whisk.

In the bowl of your mixer add 2 cups cold heavy whipping cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Mix on high, using the whisk beater, until mixture begins to thicken. It should be the consistency of thick pudding with no peaks at this time.

2 cups whipping cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla in mixer mixing bowl.

Add 6 Tablespoons of confectioners sugar with the mixer on low speed. Once incorporated return to high speed and continue to beat until stiff peaks form.

Remove pudding from refrigerator, add 1 ½ cups of whipping cream. Reserve the remaining whipped cream for the top of the pie.

Fold whipped cream into banana pudding.

The term to “Fold in” refers to taking a lighter ingredient and combining it with a heavier ingredient by turning one part over the other part! Continue doing this until both parts are one combined mixture.

Filling the Pie

If you decide to add the bananas to the pudding mixture this is the time to do that.

However, if you use my preferred method, pour the pudding mixture over the top of the bananas. Using a spatula spread the pudding evenly over the bananas, gently pushing the mixture down into the bananas and to the edge of the crust, making sure the fruit is completely covered.

Top pie with remaining whipped cream. Spread evenly and use the back of the spoon to make pretty swirls in the top of the pie.

Garnish with sliced bananas and a sprig of mint…just for a little pop of color to finish it off.

Chill pie for 2 hours or overnight. Slice and serve. (That’s my favorite part…the serving…so I can do the eating!)

Don’t those layers of creamy pudding and thick slices of fresh bananas look amazing! Combine it with that flaky crust and it’s pretty much perfection!

If you’re a cream pie lover this easy pie is for YOU! Now excuse me y’all… I gotta find me a fork!
