A home-cooked meal without fuss, this dish promises tender chicken smothered in a rich, savory gravy that will leave your taste buds delighted.

I love an easy slow cooker recipe that requires a minium of ingredients, yet produces a comforting meal the whole family will love! Plus, the house smells wonderful while it is simmering away in your crock pot.

This dish is like a mini Thanksgiving feast! If I can get all the comfort and flavor of Thanksgiving and not have a nervous breakdown in the kitchen or heat stroke…or have to wash a million dishes…then I’m in!!!

  • 3-4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 packets of dry chicken gravy mix (.87 ounces)
  • 1 can of cream chicken soup
  • 1¾ cups of water
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper (optional)

In a medium-sized bowl, mix together 2 packets of dry chicken gravy mix (0.87 ounce packets), 1 can of cream of chicken soup, 1 and ¾ cup of water. Mix to combine.

This next step is REALLY tricky! It takes massive culinary skill. I’m going to share with you how I mastered this part of the process.

The recipe calls for ¼ teaspoon of black pepper. When it comes to ¼ of a teaspoon, I don’t even mess with measuring spoons. (I’m just THAT good) Nope… I just figure a few good shakes of the pepper shaker will about cover it.

Y’all know how I love my coarse black pepper from Costco. I grabbed that giant shaker, and with my immeasurable “chef like” talent…. opened the wrong side of the cap and gave it two healthy shakes…. Yep! It takes REAL talent as a cook to screw up a recipe like this! (Aren’t y’all glad you follow me for my cooking wisdom…you’re rethinking that decision right about now…aren’t ya?)

I’ve decided that rather than writing a cook book I’m going to write “How to open a spice container for Dummies”! I have a feeling it will be a huge success… and I’ll be writing what I know!

Back to our regular scheduled recipe… Arrange the boneless skinless chicken breast in your slow cooker. You can use chicken tenders if you prefer! Either works beautifully in this recipe.

TIP: You can use cooked, and shredded, Rotisserie chicken in this recipe.

Cover your chicken with the gravy mixture.

Cover and bake on low for 8–10 hours or on high for 4–5 hours. That’s it! Easy, right? This is a recipe even the youngest chick at your Nest can make! This is a GREAT college student recipe!

Once the chicken is cooked, shred the chicken with two forks, or you can use a good old potato masher!

Note: You do not have to shred the chicken. You can serve it whole with the gravy poured over it. I just prefer to shred it.

I serve this with mashed potatoes covered in that rich creamy gravy and chicken. It can also be served over steamed white rice or your favorite pasta. So many wonderful ways to serve this dish.

If you want, you can make this into a scrumptious open-faced sandwich by serving the mashed potatoes on top of bread. This is AMAZING on top of bread, smothered in this amazing chicken and gravy! Give it a try sometime.

However you choose to serve it…we can all agree on one thing at this Nest…it’s delicious!!! 100% PURE comfort food! One of my very favorite dishes to add to my meal plan when I have a busy week ahead of me.

I like to serve with a green salad, corn, and prepared instant stuffing mix. A mini-easy Thanksgiving dinner-like meal!

If you’re a beginner cook, or a busy cook, or on a tight budget … this is a recipe for you. This is even a great recipe for the young cooks at your Nest, like I mentioned above.

With five simple ingredients, and the crock pot doing the cooking…in no time you have an amazing family dinner.

  1. This was delicious! I put a box of Stove Top stuffing (prepared using half the water called for on the box) on top of the chicken and gravy.

    1. Hi Jeannette!
I’m so sorry! I thought I had answered this…Ugh! I’d love to blame it on old age…but I think it’s just my overly crowded brain. You would want to reduce the amount of water slightly. Not by much though. Thanks for stopping by and again…so sorry for not getting back to you sooner!
      Happy New Year!

    1. Hi Brittany!
I have not tried it with Turkey breasts however, I’m sure it would work and taste amazing! I’d adjust your cook time for a little longer because of the thickness of a Turkey breast.
Hope you have a GREAT week! Thanks so much for stopping by.

    2. I am trying this today – I’m a widow and I think this will be great to make individual meals and freeze them – I’ll let you know – doing the 3 hours on high and 2 on low

  2. This was a wonderful, gentle meal. I’m not a big fan of my slow cooker, I’ve tried for years to like it. But this is one of the few I’ll keep. Thank you!!!

    1. Hi Cindy!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe. I actually understand about not being a huge fan of the slow cooker. I get frustrated myself with the fluctuation of temperatures. Grrrr! Thank you so much for taking the time to share with me. You made my day!
      Have a Great Weekend!

  3. Thank you so much Norine! I’ve decided that the next time my almost 4 year old grandson comes to visit over the weekend we can do this together since he’s at that age where he wants to ‘help’. I’ve learned throughout the years that when the little ones help cook a meal they’re more apt to eat that meal with more gusto, plus he’ll be so proud of himself. I cannot wait to do this with him. Thanks again.
